How to Connect a Neptune Apex to Reefability on Your Wi-Fi

Read your Neptune Apex probes in Reefability from your phone on home Wi-Fi or through a Reefability Display, and fix the common connection problems.

Reefability reads a Neptune Apex directly over your home network, with no Neptune cloud or Apex Fusion login involved. Read it from your phone while you are home, or have a Reefability Display read it around the clock.

Connecting a new controller needs the controller plan. If your plan does not include it, the app shows the plans screen when you start.

What comes in

Your Apex probes go to the Chemistry section of the tank you link it to, marked with the Apex as their source:

  • Temperature, pH and ORP from the base unit's probes
  • Salinity from a conductivity probe (shown as specific gravity)
  • Alkalinity, calcium and magnesium from a Trident
  • Nitrate and phosphate from a Trident NP

You only get the probes your Apex has. Read from the phone, the app's Apex screen also shows its outlets and recent power cuts.

Option 1: read it from your phone on home Wi-Fi

  1. Put your phone on the same home Wi-Fi as the Apex (not a guest network).
  2. Open Equipment and scroll to Controllers.
  3. In the Through your local network card, tap Connect next to Neptune Apex.
  4. Tap Find my Apex. The search takes a few seconds. On iPhone, allow local network access if asked.
  5. Next to your Apex, tap Link.
  6. If it shows Asks for its login, enter the Apex's local Username and Password and tap Connect.

The app tries the factory login (admin / 1234) first. This is the Apex's own local login, not your Apex Fusion email and password, and it stays on your phone.

How often it reads: when you open the app at home, then every 10 minutes while it is open. Read now reads it at once.

When you are away: nothing is read while you are out or the app is closed. When you are back home, the gap is filled from the Apex's own log, up to 3 days.

Option 2: read it through a Reefability Display

A Display reads your Apex all day, so readings and alerts keep coming while you are away.

  1. Set up and pair your Display. In Equipment, under Controllers, the Through your Reefability Display card has Pair Display.
  2. Keep the Display on the same Wi-Fi as the Apex (or on a network cable to the same router).
  3. In the setup's Assign devices step, the Display lists what it found on your Wi-Fi. Pick the tank for your Apex and confirm.
  4. Added it later? In the Display section, open Devices and tap Rescan.

An Apex is read by one reader at a time. If your Display already reads it and you link it from the phone, the app offers Read it from this phone instead, then Move to this phone. To move it back, add it again in the Display section.

If something does not work

  • No Apex found on this Wi-Fi. Check that the Apex is powered and connected. It only joins 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi or a network cable. If you changed your Wi-Fi name or password, set the Apex up again. Then tap Search again.
  • On iPhone, the search finds nothing at all. Open Settings, Privacy & Security, Local Network, and turn on Reefability.
  • Search still misses it. Tap Enter its address and type the Apex's local IP address as four numbers, like 192.168.1.40. You can find it on the Apex's own page (apex.local in a browser), under the gear icon, then Network; on an Apex Display module under System, Net Setup, IP Address; or in your router's app, in its list of connected devices.
  • "Not found on your home Wi-Fi." It missed 2 checks in a row. Check power and Wi-Fi; a firmware update also restarts the Apex for about 5 minutes. A new address from your router is found again on its own.
  • "Its login changed." Tap Change login or Enter login and type the new one. You can see or set the login on an Apex Display module under System, Net Setup, Admin Login. A reset brings back admin / 1234 but erases the Apex's setup, so ask Neptune support first.
